Corba Weblog

Vandaag is het precies twee maanden geleden toen Anggie en ik elkaar voor het eerst vriendje en vriendinnetje noemen. In de tussentijd zijn we naar veel verschillende plaza’s geweest, vier keer naar de bioscoop gegaan en elke keer als we samen waren ergens uit eten gegaan waaronder ik haar een keer heb getrakteerd op een dinneetje bij de vijf sterren hotel JW Marriot. Daarnaast zijn we twee keer naar de kapperssalon gegaan, maar niet alleen om mijn geweldige blonde haren bij te knippen.

Op enig aandringen heb ik mijn haar ook een paar keer in een cremebad gedaan. Deze keer heeft de behandeling, dat ongeveer een uur duurt, mijn kapsel wat meer volume gegeven en het ruikt lekker naar avocado. De vorige keer nam ik de aardbeiengeur (Ja, ik weet het). Ik moet toch toegeven dat het erg lekker ruikt na afloop en Anggie vindt het ook prettig. Vandaag heb ik ook mijn bakkebaarden ingekort en mijn sik weggehaald. Het komt toch wat frisser over. :-)

It has been exacly two months ago when Anggie and me officialy started a relationship. Between then and now we have been to a lot of different plaza’s and malls, we have been to four different movies and everytime we got together we ate at restaurants or foodcourts. One time a treated us both to a nice dinner at the five star hotel JW Marriot. We have also been to a barber salon twice, but not only to cut my great blonde hair.

After been pushed for a while I gave in and also took a cream bath for my hair. This treatment takes about an hour and when it’s finished my hair has more volume and smells nicely like avocado. Last time I took the strawberry one (Yes, I know). I have to admit that my hair smells nice after spending half a day at such a salon and Anggie also likes it. Today I also shortened my sideburns and shaved my goatie. It looks now more fresh and clean. :-)

Dag 102: Pondok Gede, Republiek Indonesië . De vergadering van gisteren ging iets minder goed dan ik had verwacht, het product dat ik zou installeren bevatte enkele bugs in het CMS dat door mijn collega is geschreven. Hierdoor ging het erg lastig om een demonstratie en cursus te geven hoe het de nieuwe website werkt. Met een beetje extra aandacht en drie uurtjes overwerken is het dan eindelijk gelukt: om 20:45 uur ’s nachts stond alles online, gereed voor gebruik. Ik stapte uit het gebouw van de INA, maar het vinden van een taxi was wat lastiger dan verwacht. De standaard taxistandplaats was helemaal leeg. Gelukkig kon ik op de hoofdweg, iets verderop, wel een taxi vinden en heb ik de rest van de avond gespendeerd met Anggie .

Thuis staat alles er netjes bij, ik heb vorige week mijn lage bed (20cm hoog) omgeruild voor een normaal tweepersoons bed met extra kussens. Een paar weken geleden kreeg ik van mijn vriend Matthijs een nieuwe waterkoeler. In zo’n ding gaat zo’n twintig liter watertank die je kan kopen in, en bijvullen door, de supermarkt. Onder de televisie liggen zo’n vijftig DVD’s die ik hier heb gekocht. Helaas kan ik deze niet meenemen naar Nederland, want het is allemaal illegaal materiaal: zelfs als je het in de winkel koopt en een bonnetje krijgt. Op mijn bureau staat altijd mijn laptop met de nieuwe satelliet internet en mijn nieuwste kunstwerk. Ik noem het ‘58 Bintang en 1 import Heineken’. Haha, als je het nog niet in de gaten had: weekend is bierweekend. Als ik terugkom in Nederland moet ik wel bij kunnen houden met mijn medestudenten bij de vereniging.

Day 102: Pondok Gede, Republic of Indonesia . The meeting of yesterday wasn’t going so smooth as I had hoped, the product that I would install contained several bugs in the CMS that my colleague wrote. Because of this, the demonstration and course I was going to give didn’t go as planned. With some extra attention and three hours working overtime it finally worked: at 8:45 PM everthing was functional and ready to be used by the company. I left the building of the INA, but finding a taxi was pretty hard: there was nobody at the local taxi area . Fortunate, I could find a taxi later at the main road a few minutes from there and I spend the rest of the evening together with Anggie .

At home everything looks good and clean, I have traded in my old bed (which was 20cm high) with a proper one and some extra pillows. A few weeks ago I received a new watercooler from my friend Matthijs. You put a twenty liter water tank on top of it. You can buy those things at the supermarket and they can also refill your tank. Under my television lies a collection of fifty DVD’s that I bought here. Unfortunatly, I cannot take them back to The Netherlands, because it is all illegal material: even if you buy it in the shop and you received a ticket. You’ll always find my notebook and satellite internet device on my desk, but also my newest piece of art. I will call it: ‘58 Bintang and 1 import Heineken’. Ha ha, if you haven’t found it yet: my weekend is beer weekend. WHen I come back to The Netherlands I should be able to keep up with my fellow students at my union.

Het is nu 8:30 uur in de ochtend in Jakarta stad. Ik zit nu achterin de Blue Bird taxi onderwerg naar mijn vergadering met de INA. De zon schijnt al ruim een uur in mijn rug, dus ik begin al aardig te zweten. Echter sta ik in een drukke file, dus het kan even duren voordat ik aankom. Gelukkig heb ik mijn laptop mee en mijn satellietverbinding met het internet, wat is techniek toch mooi.

It is now 8:30 AM in the morning in Jakarta city. I’m sittin’ in the back of a Blue Bird taxi on my way towards my meeting with the INA. The sun is shining in my back for almost an hour, so I am starting to sweat a little bit. I am also stuck in a traffic jam, so it’ll take a while before I arrive. Lucky for me, I have brought my notebook and satellite connection with the internet, what an age we live in huh?

Dit is mijn 50ste weblog verhaal.

Per vandaag zit ik precies 100 dagen in de republiek van Indonesië. Het is nu half één ’s nachts en ik ga slapen zodra ik dit verhaal heb afgemaakt. Eindelijk is het voor mij mogelijk om te internetten in mijn koswoning. Ik heb een hardware onderdeel met USB aansluiting gekocht dat overal verbinding kan maken met satelliet. Echt geweldig! Achter in de taxi zitten met je laptop op schoot en draadloos internet via de indoSat.

Dit is een leuke vriendengroep van mij en Anggie, we gaan regelmatig ergens uit eten, film kijken of een potje poolen. Rechtsonder mij zit een van de beste vriendinnen van Anggie: Vicy. Helemaal links zit Lucky: hij heeft gestudeert in Canada en woont daar nu ook. Regelmatig komt hij terug om zijn vrienden op te zoeken. Anggie, voor de mensen die haar nog niet herkennen, zit links van mij. (Rechts op de foto)

Morgenvroeg heb ik de afsluitende vergadering met de Indonesian Netherlands Assocation, voor hen heb ik een geheel nieuwe website gebouwd met achterliggende Content Management Systeem (CMS). Tijdens de meeting ga ik de applicatie installeren op hun server en locale intronet, daarnaast ga ik de medewerkers een cursus geven hoe ze de nieuwe applicatie kunnen gebruiken.

Ik heb net weer een stroomuitval gehad van een halfuur (’mati lampu’), echt zo’n moment waarop de kaarsjes worden aangestoken. Overal in de regio van Pondok Gede is het pikkedonker in elk huis, behalve in die ene kos, want daar zit dhr. Corba met zijn vijf brandende kaarsen een laptop en internet. Internet bij kaarslicht en ik begin een chatsessie van twee uur met mijn ouders in Arnhem. Meteen even een rondleiding gegeven.

Nog 58 dagen en dan gaat mijn reis verder in mijn land van herkomst.

This is my 50th weblog story.

This is the 100th day I am residing in Republic Indonesia. Right now it’s a half past midnight and once I’m finished writing this piece I’m going to sleep right away. Finally it’s possible for me to surf the web from my little house. I have bought a piece of hardware with connects your computer (through USB) with a satellite. It’s fantastic! Sittin’ in the back of a taxi, havin’ a notebook on your lap and using wireless internet of indoSat.

This is a great group of friends (picture in Dutch section) who Anggie and me are hanging out with. We are going to have dinner together, watch a film in the theater are we play some pool. Under me, to the right is Vicy: one of Anggie’s best friends. All the way to the left is Lucky: hij studied in Canada en is now living there. Once in a while he returns to Indonesia to keep in touch with his friends. Anggie, for those who do not recognize my girlfriend yet, is sittin’ to the left of me.

Tomorrow morning I have a meeting with the Indonesian Netherlands Association. I have created a complete new website with Content Management System (CMS) and tomorrow I wil install this on their server and local intranet, after that I will give a short course to the employes ‘how’ to use this new application.

Recently I’ve encountered another power failure (’mati lampu’) that lasted half an hour. At a moment like this, the candles will be lit. Everywhere in Pondok Gede there is no light to see, except for that little hous where mr. Corba is siiting with five candles, a notebook and internet. Surfing the web at candle light and I start a chat session with my parents for two hours. Of course, I gave them a sightseeing tour by webcam since they have never seen my house before.

Only 58 days remains before I continue my journey in my native country.

Tijdens mijn verblijf in Indonesië ben ik met een aantal verschillende vervoersmiddelen geweest. Om te beginnen kwam ik aan op Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in een Boeing 747 van luchtvaartmaatschappij Lufthansa. Na mijn aankomst stapte ik voor de eerste keer in de APV van Remko, een lekker grote bak met veel ruimte achterin. De auto heeft twee achterbanken en heeft een vervoerscapaciteit van acht mensen. Een van mijn eerste dagen op het kantoor nam ik de Angkot: een busje waarvan overdag er elke minuut gemiddeld vier voorbij rijden in de hoofdstraat van Pondok Gede. Zie ook een van mijn eerste blog entries over het openbaar vervoer .

Als je veel of weinig uitgaat in Jakarta stad, de taxi terugnemen is als Europeaan makkelijk te doen. De prijzen zijn hier totaal anders. In Nederland betaal je ongeveer twee euro per minuut dat je in de taxi zit, hier betaal je iets minder dan één euro per tien minuten dat je in de auto zit. Een uur rijden in de taxi (afstand tussen Arnhem en Amsterdam) kost je ongeveer vijf euro. Echter is het niet verstandig om elke willekeurige taxi te pakken, helemaal niet in de avonduren. De taximaatschappij die je het meeste kan vertrouwen is de ‘Blue Bird’, zij kosten wat meer dan de andere taxi’s maar de kans dat ze helemaal omrijden of zogenaamd geen wisselgeld bij zich hebben is veel kleiner. Er bestaat een hele serie van deze maatschappij, zo heb je bijvoorbeeld:

• Silver Bird - rijden in o.a. zwarte Mercedes (20% duurder dan Blue Bird)
• Golden Bird - autoverhuur van o.a. silveren Mercedes en limo’s
• Big Bird - het verhuur en vervoer van bussen
• Iron Bird - het vervoer van goederen
• Sea Bird - het vervoer van goederen over zee

Dan kan je ook nog in een geselecteerd aantal gebieden de TransJakarta buslijn nemen: deze gaat snel omdat het een eigen baan heeft waar niemand op mag rijden, er komt elke vijf minuten weer een nieuwe bus die dezelfde kant opgaat en de chauffeurs rijden lekker hard door.

Tot slot hebben we de Becak (spreek je uit als ‘Betjak’). Dit is de bekende Aziätische fietstaxi, tijdens het regenseizoen zie je ze vaker met een dak erop. De meeste die ik gebruik om naar de lokale plaza te gaan hebben geen dakje. Je betaald een mannetje ongeveer 70 eurocent en hij brengt je verderop. Hier in Bekasi heb je natuurlijk gaan fietspaden, dus je staat soms in de file tussen alle uitlaatgassen van de Angkot’s en andere auto’s of bussen. Ook is de wegdek niet altijd goed, dus wees voorbereid op een hobbelig ritje, he he.

De Becak fietsers vlakbij het kantoor kennen mij natuurlijk vrij goed en ze groeten me elke ochtend vriendelijk in hun beste Engels in ik doe hetzelfde in mijn beste Bahasa Indonesia.

During my stay here in Republic Indonesia I have used a bunch of different vehicles to get around the city. First of all, I landed on Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in a Boeing 747 of airline company Lufthansa. After my arrival I entered the APV of Remko for the first time as well. The big car has a lot of space in the back: it has two backseats and has a total capacity of eight people. On one of my first days at the office I took the Angkot: a little van which passes you by four times every minute during the day. Also read my previous blog entry about the public transportation .

If you go out often or once in a while, taking the taxi back home is easy as a European. The prices here are completely different. For example, in The Netherlands you pay around two euros for every minute you sit in the cab, here you pay less than one euro for every ten minutes. Sitting in the car for an hour (distance between Arnhem and Amsterdam) wil cost you around five euros. But it’s not clever to take any taxi you encounter, especially late at night. The taxi company you can trust the most is ‘Blue Bird’, they will charge you a bit more than other companies but the chance that they will drive around the wrong places or they ‘unfortunately’ do not have change at the moment as much smaller. There are more bird companies in this region, like:

• Silver Bird - drives in black Mercedes (20% more expensive than Blue Bird)
• Golden Bird - car rental of silver Mercedes and limousines
• Big Bird - rental or transportation of/with busses
• Iron Bird - transportation of goods
• Sea Bird - transportation of goods overseas

In a few areas you can also take the TransJakarta busway: this one is fast since it has an own buslane where nobody else is allowed, every five minutes arrives a new bus for the same direction and the drivers are really ‘using’ the power of the bus engine.

Last but not least, the Becak (pronounce as ‘Bedjak’). This is a famous Asian bike taxi, during the rain season you see them more often with a roof on it. The ones I am using do not have a roof. You pay the guy around 70 eurocents en he’ll take you somewhere else in the area. There does not exist any bicycle lanes here in Bekasi, so sometimes you end up stuck in a traffic jam between all the gasses that come from the Angkot’s and cars/busses. Also, the tarmac is not really good, so be prepared for a bumpy ride, he he.

The Becak drivers near the office recognize me every morning and they always greet me in their best English and I do the same in my best Bahasa Indonesia.

Vandaag publiceer ik de trailer van mijn nieuwe film over mijn stage in Indonesië. Ik ben nu al drie maanden hier, ik heb heel wat foto’s en video’s gemaakt en daarnaast eet ik ook nog elke dag rijst, kroepoek en sambal. Terwijl ik in mijn vrije tijd een film maak op DVD voor het thuisfront, heb deze aankondiging gemaakt.

Deze aankondiging bevat nog geen beeldmateriaal van Jakarta, om zo de spanning hoog te houden. Geheel in James Bond-stijl vertel ik u: in februari 2009 is deze productie afgerond!

Today I release this trailer regardig a film I am currently producing about my internship in Indonesia. I have been here for over three months, gathered a lot of photos and videos and eating every day rice, kroepoek and sambal. While I’m creating this film on DVD in my free time, I show you all this announcement.

This announcement doesn’t contain any imaging of Jakarta itself to keep this film interesting for the people back home. Complete in James Bond style I’ll tell you: in february 2009 is this production completed! -Dutch only-

Gisteren ben ik naar de nieuwe James Bond film gegaan genaamd ‘Quantum of Solace’. Het was erg duidelijk dat er een nieuwe director aanwezig is geweest, want de film heeft een totaal andere opbouw dan elke andere Bond film. Ik was ook teleurgesteld in het resultaat, want de vorige film was al een stukje minder in Bond-stijl (toch mijn favoriete film!), deze film ging nog een stapje achteruit. Wat ik wel leuk vond is dat het verhaal verdergaat waar Casino Royale is gestopt, een aantal personages kwamen weer terug en dat was wel aardig.

Alhoewel er een behoorlijk aantal mensen vinden dat Daniel Craig geen echte James Bond is (voornamelijk omdat hij blond haar heeft en zijn voorgangers niet), ben ik van mening dat hij een goede acteur is en ik vind hem een uitstekende Bond!

Yesterday I’ve been to the new James Bond film named ‘Quantum of Solace’. It was very clear that there was a new director on the set, because the film has a completely different structure than any other Bond film. I also was disappointed with the final result, since the last film was less in Bond style (still my favourite!), this film was even worse. What I did like was the fact the certain characters returned from Casino Royale, the film continued where this story ended in the previous Bond.

Unfortunatly there are people who think that Daniel Craig is not a real James Bond (since he has blond hair and the others didn’t), but I think he is a great actor and he fits perfectly as Bond!

Ik laat even een stukje zien van het kantoor, aangezien er wat vrienden en familie naar vragen. De werkvloer van Dot Us Indonesia kent een vijftal medewerkers, waarvan de zesde (Dhiesta) vorige week is opgestapt tijdens haar proefperiode. Op de foto aan de linkerkant zie je de werkkamer waar alle magie gebeurd. Aan de linkerwand van links naar rechts zitten:

- Mbak Ari: doet financiële zaken, een gedeelte van content management en allerlei kleine zaken.
- Mas Robin: aan de witte bureau zit ik als website engineer.
- Mas Radyan: de vaste website engineer van het bedrijf.

Verder zitten er buiten deze kamer:

- Mbak Lala: vaste content manager van het bedrijf.
- Bapak Remko: onze baas en aandeelhouder met meerderheidsbelang.
- Mbak Titin: de koffie/lunch manager en ze doet tevens mijn vuile was.

Desondanks dat het op de foto er wat ongezellig uitziet, is juist het altijd gezellig op het kantoor en kan ik veel lachen met mijn collegae. Daarnaast is het erg handig om vanaf het kantoor eten of een taxi te bestellen. Afgelopen week heb ik twee aanmeldingen binnengekregen om te komen stagelopen: Arjan en Chris zijn beiden geïnteresseerd om na mij hier te komen. Wellicht is het handig (voor degene die de stageplek krijgt) om mijn koswoning over te nemen.

Let me show you a piece of the office since a few friends and family are asking me to do so. The company of Dot Us Indonesia has five employees, but the sixth (Dhiesta) has left last week during her trail period. On the picture in the Dutch section you’ll see the workroom where all the magic happens. Against the left wall from left to right we have:

- Mbak Ari: does financial business, parts of content management and other little things.
- Mas Robin: at the white desk working as website engineer.
- Mas Radyan: the website engineer of the company.

Furthermore, outside this room we have:

- Mbak Lala: does content management of the company.
- Bapak Remko: our boss and shareholder with biggest interest.
- Mbak Titin: the coffee/lunch manager and she also takes care of my laundry.

Though, it doesn’t look really fabulous, the working ambience is great and there is a lot to talk and laugh about with my colleagues. It’s also very handy to order food or a cab from the office floor. I’ve received two reactions on my request for a new internshipper: Arjan and Chris are both interested to come here for their work experience. It could come in handy to offer (the lucky one who definitely gets it) a take-over of my little house.
